UNDERSTANDING HEART TESTS
Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring
A patient guide to blood pressure readings outside the clinic.
Test information only. Contact the clinic to confirm availability and whether this test is appropriate before making arrangements.
WHAT IT MEANS
Understanding the test
Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring uses a cuff and portable recorder to take repeated readings, commonly across a day and night. It can help clarify whether clinic readings reflect your usual blood pressure pattern.
Why it may be recommended
- A difference between clinic and home measurements
- Confirmation of a suspected blood pressure problem
- A clinician’s request to understand the pattern over time

YOUR NEXT STEP
What to expect
The provider fits the cuff and explains the schedule. Carry on with the activities advised and keep your arm still when the cuff inflates. You may be asked to record sleep, activity and medicine times. Follow the provider’s instructions about keeping the device dry and returning it.
Questions worth asking
- How should I respond when the cuff inflates?
- What should I record in the diary?
- Should I take my usual medicines?
Ask for an explanation in words you understand, and check who to contact if you need help after the appointment.
