UNDERSTANDING HEART TESTS
Echocardiography
A patient guide to ultrasound imaging of the heart.
Test information only. Contact the clinic to confirm availability and whether this test is appropriate before making arrangements.
WHAT IT MEANS
Understanding the test
An echocardiogram uses ultrasound to produce moving pictures of the heart. It can help assess pumping function and valves. It is different from an ECG, which records electrical activity.
Why it may be recommended
- A clinical question about pumping function or valves
- Assessment after certain symptoms or examination findings
- Follow-up recommended for an existing heart condition

YOUR NEXT STEP
What to expect
During a usual ultrasound examination through the chest, a probe with gel is moved over the skin. You may be asked to change position. Other types of echocardiography need different preparation, so confirm exactly which test has been requested and follow the provider’s instructions.
Questions worth asking
- Which type of echocardiogram has been requested?
- Is any preparation needed?
- How will the findings affect my follow-up?
Ask for an explanation in words you understand, and check who to contact if you need help after the appointment.
