UNDERSTANDING HEART TESTS
Exercise / Stress Testing
A patient guide to assessing the heart’s response to increased workload.
Test information only. Contact the clinic to confirm availability and whether this test is appropriate before making arrangements.
WHAT IT MEANS
Understanding the test
An exercise stress test monitors the heart while activity increases, usually on a treadmill or exercise bicycle. The test is chosen for a specific clinical question. It is not appropriate for everyone and should be arranged only after medical assessment.
Why it may be recommended
- Assessment of selected symptoms associated with exertion
- A clinician’s recommendation to evaluate exercise response
- Clarifying the next step after a consultation

YOUR NEXT STEP
What to expect
The testing team explains preparation, monitors you during the test and tells you when to stop. Wear suitable clothing if advised. Instructions about food, caffeine and medicines depend on the planned test; ask the provider and do not stop medicines on your own.
Questions worth asking
- Why has this test been recommended for me?
- What preparation and medicine instructions apply?
- How will the result be explained?
Ask for an explanation in words you understand, and check who to contact if you need help after the appointment.
