UNDERSTANDING HEART TESTS
ECG / Electrocardiogram
A patient guide to a recording of the heart’s electrical activity.
Test information only. Contact the clinic to confirm availability and whether this test is appropriate before making arrangements.
WHAT IT MEANS
Understanding the test
An ECG uses small electrodes on the skin to record the electrical signals of the heart. It can help assess the heart rate and rhythm. It is one part of an assessment and does not answer every question about heart disease.
Why it may be recommended
- Assessment of certain symptoms or rhythm concerns
- Review of an earlier ECG finding
- A test recommended after a clinical consultation

YOUR NEXT STEP
What to expect
For a standard resting ECG, electrodes are placed on the chest and limbs while you lie still. The recording is usually brief. Ask the testing provider about preparation and tell them if adhesive pads irritate your skin. The result should be interpreted alongside your symptoms and history.
Questions worth asking
- What question is this ECG intended to answer?
- Who will explain the result?
- What should I do if symptoms return after the test?
Ask for an explanation in words you understand, and check who to contact if you need help after the appointment.
